How to Maximise the Space in a Small Kitchen

When contending with a smaller area whilst designing a kitchen, planning the layout, lighting and style is essential for maximising the space and making it feel bigger than it really is.

There are many tactics that our designers use for opening up a space, which enables them to deliver your dream kitchen, whatever the size.

Light Colours

Lighter colours are the best choice for brightening and visually opening up a space to make it feel more roomy. If you don't want to go for the traditional lighter colours, such as a white kitchen, you could opt for the on-trend green colour palette and incorporate light green tones, such as sage.

Reflective Surfaces

Incorporating reflective surfaces, for light to bounce off, will make the room feel brighter. To achieve this, go for a glossy finish on your cabinet doors or potentially an industrial style stainless steel countertop.

Strategic Lighting

If it's possible, having natural lighting in your kitchen to reflect off the glossy surfaces is the best way to brighten the room and make it feel bigger. However, strategically placed artificial lighting can also create a visual illusion. Placing lights under the cabinets draws the eyes to areas with more space. Thus, creating the impression of a larger kitchen. It is also a functional solution for a kitchen with less room for light fixtures.

Remove Clutter

Overfilling a small kitchen will only make it look smaller. The minimalist look will be the best approach in creating the illusion of having more space in your kitchen. Therefore, keeping the surfaces clear of appliances is essential, so read on to find out how.

Smart Storage

Carefully planning your storage is the most important step when designing your kitchen. Making sure everything has a place it can be kept ensures you can keep your surfaces clear of clutter. Internal storage solutions will mean you make the best use of the space you have by sectioning off cupboards and drawers. It will also just help you to stay more organised in general, so what's not to love?!

Combined Appliances

Investing in multi-functional appliances means you own less appliances and, therefore, have more space in your kitchen. There are many ways you can achieve this. For instance, purchasing a combined washer and dryer or a combined microwave and oven. Additionally, installing a boiling water tap removes the need for a kettle taking up room on your countertop.

Open Wall Shelving

Create some wall space for open shelving, as it's not only functional for storage, but it's also not as bulky as wall units. Therefore, creating the illusion of more space.

Handleless Kitchens

A Handleless cabinet makes sense in a small kitchen. Removing handles will physically create more room in a narrow kitchen. The clean lines of Kitchen World's Straffan Handleless door will make a small kitchen look sleeker and roomier, too.
